Epilogue

The crew returned home after the long night feeling really tired, and as soon as they got home they went straight to bed. This time, though everyone went to their own own bed, and slept almost 24 hours. They were happy to be able to finnaly sleep in without being anxious about having to save someone the next day, or night for that matter. By morning everyyone woke up feeling very refreshed. As they got up, Nellie cooked a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs, and oatmeal. Everyone ate a triple portion of each. They were as hungry as wolves. After scarfing down their breakfast, the set to work. Cara went to work fixing the security cameras, but had no success with retrieving the lost video feed. Insteadshe decided to make it more protect from hackers, by setting up acouple of extra security programs. Dan set to work taking apart his metal detector. and rebuilding everything that he had taken apart to build it. He rebuilt the game systems that he had taken apart to get the right cables that he needed. Thankfully Dan had photographic memory, so he was don e with that job pretty quickly. Next, he had to remake the brass dishes that he had used to mold the exterior of the metal detector. After that, he reinstalled the klaxon into the vehicle that he had taken it from. Finnaly, he was able to go into his game room, play video games, and chat with Atticus, his best friend, who was also a genius. Meanwhile, Amy was catching up with all that she had missed during her 6 month vacation. She decided to let a representative from each branch to help her lead the Cahills. From the Lucians she chose Ian. From the Ekats she chose Cara. From the Tomas she chose Hamilton. From the Janus she chose Jonah.

The End

Chapter 14

Dan ran into the wooded area so that he could he could hide if he needed to. Since Dan didn’t hear any shouts from behind him, he looked back and saw only the vault dood, which was still open. Dan hid behind tree , jut in case  it was a trap, and obsereved what happened next. Dan was expecting something bad to appen, such as perhaps a heat seeking missile launching out of an unseen missile launcher. This was a  silly thought, of course, since the kidnappers wouldn’t want to blow up a couple of houses while attempting to kill one kid. Then Dan noticed a head poking out of the vault. It looked alot like Cara’s head. Then she emerged completely, only to let Amy come out. After Amy came Ian, and after him came Nellie. Dan almost leapt out of his hiding spot, but thought that there might be guards escorting them to some different prison, but after 7 minutes of waiting, Dan lost his patience. He lept up, and hurtled himself at his friends. When he tackled Amy, she was so surprised, that she fell over. Then Dan started to pummel them with questions. “Why didn’t you take me with you guys?”He asked. “Why didn’t you return home? How did you survive? Why did you shut off the security cameras while you left?” “Calm down Dan,”Amy replied.”It’ impossible to understand you.” Dan asked the questions again, this time, though, he calmed down and Amy understood what he was saying.”To answer the first question,” Amy replied. “You looked so tired after our first trip that we decided to let you sleep. To answer the second question, locked ourselves in by accident when we came inside. You see, we forgot to leave the vault door open, and we got stuck inside. Thankfully, though, we had some food and water with us, which answers your third qustion. And as for the fourth question, we had no idea about the security cameras shutting off.” “Well,” Dan concluded. “The good news is that you’re safe, but the bad news is that the kidnappers are still at large.”

Chapter 13

The walk was uneventful, which made Dan so nervous, that he couldn’t stop shaking while he was walking. He was anxious because he had a hunch that something bad would happen as soon as he got near Cara. This thought made Dan determined to save her really quickly. He broke into a run, and saw a glint of brass in the moonlight. At first Dan was unsure what it was, but then he remembered his abandoned metal detector. He took it out, and sure enough it was the metal detector. Dan decided to take it along with him just in case the vault was buried under some dirt. Once Dan got to the secret entrance to the road that led to Cara’s vault (or so he hoped) he got out his thermos with ice cubes and his suit. He did this to be prepared to put his suit on at a moments notice. He kept moving, even though he was a fraid that the robots might pop up at any moment and disintegrate him on the spot. As he reached the 200 foot mark, Dan noticed that the sun was rising, but it was too lte to turn back, now that he had made it this far. He decided to put his suit on inside out to deflect the plasma beams for the pistols using the reflective surface of the suit. Hopefully his plan would work, and instead of killing Dan, the robots would kill themselves. This last lesson Dan had found out during a game of laser tag during his and Amy’s vacation. this last thought about Amy Dan a pang in his heart, since he still needed to rescue her after he rescued Cara. As Dan ran toward the vault he was surprised that nothing attacked him, and he reached the vault doorwithout any problems. As he opened the vault up he was struck by lots of light and a loud sound. “Oh no,” He thought. “I’m caught.”

Chapter 12

Dan stood up with a groan. He knew that he shouldn’t have attempted to ram anything with his head, but it had been too tempting to do something fun during serious work. Now Dan had a blooming headache, and he still needed to get back home by foot. It was already almost morning, so Dan had to get home quickly enough to be able to double check each part of the house before falling asleep. The walk home was so uneventful that Dan also had enough time to eat after checking each part of the house. This time, though, he made it to bed before falling asleep. Dan was so tuckered out because of his long day, that when he fell asleep, he had no dreams. When Dan woke up, he realized something that made him scream. He was sleeping in Amy’s bed! Then, after he started to think about it, he just felt worse. He still hadn’t found anyone that he cared for. He hadn’t even foud Cara, Whom he’d been looking for, for so long that he had no ideas how many days had passed since Ian had last seen her. Dan felt guilty for everyones disappearance. This thought made Dan even more determined to save at least Cara, and hopefully also save Amy, Nellie, and Ian. First of all he had to focus on saving Cara. After that, she could help him undo the glitches on the security cameras which would help in finding out where the others were. Dan set to work packing his backpack with all the necessities for the liberation: a thermos with ice cubes to put in his suit to cool him off, 5 anti bodyheat suits, food, and water. After finishing with packing, Dan sat down to a late breakfast (it was 9:30 p.m.). It consisted of plain old cereal and milk. After breakfast Dan set out to save Cara.

Chapter 11

Halfway through the trek Dan felt really thirsty. It was only then that Dan realized that he hadn’t brought anything other than the metal detector. He had even forgotten to bring the suits that were essential to getting past the robots with plasma pistols, who could disintegrate him on the spot if their cameras caught sight of his heat radiation. He decided to first find the secret entrance, and then return for the rest of the material, later. Thankfully there was a gas station next to the uncharted road, so Dan went inside, bought two bottles of water, drank the everything in the first one, stuffed the other on into his pocket, nad continued on. As he approached the first intersection on the uncharted road, Dan realized something very depressing. He didn’t even need the metal detector that he had put so much effort into. He knew that it was worth quite alot both moneteraly and sentimentaly, which was the only reason why he didn’t smash it. He had been so joyful just moments ago, and now that joy wasreplaced with sorrow and anger. He wanted to break something, or hurt someone, but he restisted this urge, hid the the metal detector in some bushes, marked the exact location on his GPS, and trudged on. Dan was surprised at how easy it was to find the secret entrance to the road that led to Cara’s vault. On the third intersection, When he turned right, Dan saw a shimmering forest wall, so, hoping that the trees were fake, he lowered his head and charged. Luckily for him the trees were fake, but his luck ended right there, because the trees 3 feet behind the fake forest wall were real.

Chapter 10

Upon waking up Dan felt very refreshed. He had slept from ten o’clock in th morning untill nine o’clock in the evening. He was still depressed, though, because he still hadn’t found anybody that he cared for. He was hopeful, but he didn’t expect to find anyone. After he washed the mashed potatoes off his face, he went searching through the house, just in case he could find out whether the people that he cared for were stuck in a placelike a closet, were there weren’t any security cameras. Of course, he found no one. After that, he checked again, but did not have any more succes then the last time he had checked. Just then D an remembered that he needed to test his metal detector, so he went to the room were he had left it, but was surprised to find it taken apart and neatly put in seperate piles. He was lucky to have photographic memory, so it simplified the task of rebuilding the metal detector. He was done in one our, which was quite quick, since last time it took him 3 hours to build. When he was done, he looked at all the security camera videos to see who had taken it apart, but once again he found no useful information. Once he had done that he went outside with a piece of iron and his metal detector. He buried the iron a couple of feet away from the house, plugged his headphones into his metal detector, moved a couple feet away, and powered it up. As he got close to where the iron was the metal detector started beeping, and it grew louder the closer he got. Dan’s heart leapt with joy, but to make sure that the metal detector really worked, Dan redid the test in a different spot. Sure enough as though a miricle had occured, it worked once again. So, Dan began his long, night-time trip with the metal detector (that was really heavy) slung over his houlder.

Chapter 9

Dan looked everywhere for any signs of his friends and/or family. He looked in Amy’s room, in Nellie’s room, and in Ian’s room. He even looked in Command Central and the cellar. He was just about to give up and go play his video games, when he remembered that Cara needed to be rescued. He thought that perhaps Amy had told the others to leave witout him, but when he checked, all 10 of their vehicles were in the garage. Dan tried to look over the security camera videos, but something strange happened. One moment Nellie was on the couch, and the next, she was gone.

***
Dan went went to work building a metal detector. He felt extremely lonely while he was downloading the blueprints for a metal detector. Once he printed the blueprint out out, he set to work finding the materials that he needed to build it. The easiest to find was brass, and even that was difficult to find. The next thing on the list was an extra strong magnet. This took him a good 20 minutes. Then he had to find a bunch of different cables. By the time he found everything it was already morning. Dan just decided to keep working. He molded the brass into the right shape, attaching the wires to the magnet, the claxon, and his home made button. Before he tested it out, Dan decided to eat. He had been awake for over twelve hours now, and he was starving. While Dan ate he tried to stay awake, but he felt his eyes drooping. Then he fell face first into his food, fast asleep.

Chapter 8

Locating the vault was difficult on it’s own, but geting to it was even more difficult. First of all, no charted roads led to it, so they had to guess what roads to go on. Their faces were set in grim determination. Everyone was anxious. Dan was anxious because he was sort of looking forward to seeing robots with plasma pistols, and hewanted to help save Cara as quickly as possible. Amy just wanted to save Cara without losing her life, Dan losing his, or Nellie losing hers. Ian just wabted to see Cara alive and well, since she was his girlfriend, and he didn’t want another person that he loved, to die (the first had been his little sister, Natalie). Nellie was just anxious for her kiddos (Dan and Amy) to survive. She was prepared to die for them. The crew had taken so mny wrong turns that they had to come back and refuel so many times that it turned out that they had spent over $500 only on gas. By the time they got to the end of the main uncherted road it was already bright outside, and they had still not found the vault, even after looking through each secondary road. By the time the got home they were so tired that they had just enough time to set an alarm for 9:00p.m. before they fell asleep.

***
Dan’s dreams were muddled, and he dreamt of magic, and about how magic is just illusions. He dreamt of buried treasure and landmines and how people found them with metal detectors. He also dreamt of the setting of a book he read, were a godess named Hekate lived in her shadowrealm that was hidden behind an illusion of trees.

***
As Dan woke up he realized that his dream had explained what to do. He ran downstairs to announce the news, but found himself alone.

Chapter 7

At this fresh piece of news everyone’s hopes grew, but then shrunk as Ian continued his explanation, “She is kept in a well guarded vault nearby. Sadly, though, it’s well guarded by six robots with infra-red cameras and plasma pistols that will disintegrate you on the spot. Also, during the day they have motion sensor cameras. This being said it is impossible to attack by day, but by night, with the proper equipment, we could attempt a break out.” They set to work with their hopes up high. There was much to be done, and little time to do it. They had to make 4 alluminum suits, since alluminum could reflect body heat. Also, they would need a metal cutter to break through the chains that possibly held Cara. While they were working, Ian briefed them on the “mission” details, “When you get within 200 ft. of the vault put on your suits. Any sooner and you’ll cook yourself. Any later and you risk getting disintegrated. Once you get in, don’t close the vault door, or else you’ll be locked in there forever.”

Chapter 6

Amy pointed the outline out to the others. As they zoomed in more, the outline became more vivid. It was unmistakeabley a menacing bear with its claws extracted and its toungue stuck out. “It could still be a red herring, though,” Nellie commented doubtfully. “It is our best lead, though, so why not follow it?” Dan replied. In the end they had decided to contact the the Tomas branch leaders about the problem. They made their way  back to Command Central. Command Central was a humungeous room with two computer databases. One database, containing all the Cahill files, was connected to a single 92″ monitor. The second, filled with Cahill cantact information, was connected to multiple 15″ screens. Amy powered up the second database, preparing to talk to the Tomas leaders. The moment the last Tomas leader connected Amy explained the situation to them. They were outraged, their faces turning tomato red with anger. “The Tomas would never do such a thing!” One man shouted angrily. It took all of twenty minutes and all of Amy’s diplomatic abillities to calm them down and to explain that she did not suspect that the leaders had done these atrocius deeds, but some renegade members of the Tomas branch. Amy explained that the places they were looking at the most were the Hawaiian section of the branch and the Boston section, were the attacks had happened. As Amy shut down the computers Ian burst into the room panting. “I know where Cara is,” He wheezed.
